Co-Founding Oracle:


In 1977, Miner met Larry Ellison where he was Ellison’s supervisor.
He left to co-found Software Development Laboratories (later renamed Oracle Corporation) with Ed Oates and Bruce Scott.
Miner and Ellison were introduced to E. F. Codd’s relational model for database management, which became the foundation for Oracle’s success.
They beat IBM to the market with their relational database management system (RDBMS) based on Codd’s model1.
Role at Oracle:
During Oracle’s startup days, Miner was the lead engineer, programming most of Oracle Version 3 himself.

Edward A Oates born in 1946, is an American businessman, software engineer, entrepreneur, and musician. Along with Larry Ellison and Bob Miner, he co-founded Oracle Corporation, originally known as Software Development Labs12. Oates graduated with a BA in mathematics from San Jose State University in 1968 and worked at various companies before co-founding Oracle. After retiring from Oracle in 1996, he purchased a high-end home theater store called Audible Difference, which counted Larry Ellison and Steve Jobs among its clients. Oates also volunteers on the boards of the San Francisco Zoological Society and the Tower Foundation Board of San Jose State University. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, building H0 scale model railroads, doing video work for the Woodside Priory School Theater, and playing guitar in the band Quite the accomplished individual!
